Mitch Picks Georgia Tech Vs. Miami 11/20/08 College Football ATS

By Mitch • November 19th, 2008

This has been one of the better weeks of weeknight football for the year and it continues tonight.

We also continue with the free picking contest which is entering it’s final few weeks. We have a big plan for the  bowl season and while I’m still trying to decide on whether or not to include some of the earlier bowls, I am leaning towards having the contest start later so everyone who who wants to enter will have plenty of time to do so as it won’t be like normal where it restarts every week. There will be more details in the days ahead.

Well lets get on to tonight’s action.

Miami +3 1/2 at Georgia Tech (Thursday 11/20/08, 7:45 EST) 7 out of 10

Miami comes into this game red hot, winners of their last 5 and firmly in control of their own destiny in the ACC. Georgia Tech comes in losers of 2 of their last 3 which could have easily been 3 in a row if it wasn’t for a fortunate fumble by Florida State inside the Tech 5 yard line with less than a minute left to play. This should be a low scoring hard hitting game as neither team has a great offense but both has superlative defenses. For Miami while they rank 43rd in scoring offense, they don’t come within 30 places of that positioning in other offensive categories like yards gained on the ground or through the air. For Georgia Tech their offense is an option style which makes their running game one of the best in the country but their passing game is lacking and overall they are the 78th ranked scoring offense. On defense the Hurricanes are young and fast and rank in the top 20 in most defensive categories and are 19th in the country against the run giving up just over 100 yards per game. For the Yellow Jackets, they rank close to the top 10 in most defensive categories.

Miami comes in at 5-4 against the spread and Georgia Tech is an impressive 5-2-1 against the number. The road team in this series is 4-1 against the spread in the last 5 meetings. Miami is 4-0 against the spread i their last 4 road games against a team with a winning record and they are 5-0 in their last 5 on the road. Georgia Tech is 2-5-1 against the spread in their last road games and 2-5-1 against the spread when playing a team with a winning record. Georgia Tech is also 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 Thursday games and 1-7 against the spread in the week following a bye week. I look for Miami to use it’s team speed on defense to give their offense good enough field position to score and win the game. I also look for some very hard hitting and the winner of this one should be deserving and my pick is that Miami wins and continues it’s march towards the ACC Championship.

I agree with your Miami pick. Great analysis. The Ball State was a safe pick as well, I was with Mitch on CMU and left the game alone after reading what you thought about it. Great call

I’m right there with you on the ‘canes mitch…

Central Michigan should have won, but in a tight game you can’t afford to miss 2 fg’s and drop a sure TD pass! Play of the game was that perfect 3rd down pass by Lefevour that landed in his WR’s hands, but the DB was right behind and knocked it out! I was disappointed that it wasn’t snowing harder lol.

Don’t forget the refs. Started early with that non facemask call that even the guilty party was kicking himself for.

I have to say I don’t like to complain when i lose or push on questionable officiating but what about the spotting of the ball on a few of those close Ball State first downs, I re-watched and Stopped action and I’m not so sure they got at least 2 of them.

cmon fellas should’ve could’ve would’ve

Wow..I did start to sound like a little B*&%ch there for a minute didn’t I??..lol

NEXT!

:)

I really like miami but they failed me last week

Miami has a not so great defense and a pretty good offense. Georgia has a great defense but their offense is not that great. I think Miami’s defense can handle Georgia’s mediocre to poor offense and visa-verse. In the end (i think) this one will be a close game, definitely less than a TD. I’m taking the free 3.5 points on this one in the under, especially considering what Miami has done in the past 5 games.
