Week 3 College Football Games We Aren’t Touching 9/13/08

By Mitch • September 13th, 2008

Special thanks to Kansas who did everything they could to make sure we covered and brought our record to 30-18 (+14 1/2 Units) against the spread.

We were pretty much spot on in our assessment that there were two evenly matched teams and the stats and scoreboard will show that as well in the Kansas-South Florida game and we even called it that the extra 1/2 point we were getting had a chance to be the difference maker in us being winners and losers. While I thought Kansas was the better team the scoreboard showed different. I’ll take the cover and be happy any day.

So today we move on to our regular schedule of Saturday games. We’ve covered most of the games already and I still like all of those even those whose times and location have moved, more importantly, we still like all of the games whose lines have moved.

The line on Ohio State-USC is at 11 1/2 and I’m still all over the Buckeyes. I don’t think the Beanie injury matters as much as most think (though he certainly wouldn’t hurt our chances) but he wouldn’t have been the key. For an OSU cover they are going to need to dominate in the trenches which they are capable of doing. One thing of note, while the point spread has moved a lot the money line hasn’t budged yet which to me means that those people who think Ohio State is going to outright them (I’m on that small for myself) they are still believers yet no more believers have jumped on board the Trojan band wagon despite Beanie not being in there. You can draw your own conclusions, but how a team that has been in the last 2 national title games and has almost an entire team of returning starters would be considered a major upset doesn’t make much sense to me; there’s a ton of value on our pick, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

There are also still a few games I’m on the fence on and don’t like enough to make a call. I’ll run through a few of these now real quickly.

FAU at Michigan State (Today 9/13/08, 12 EST) Line: Michigan State -17

There aren’t a ton of early games today that we’re on so I tried to figure out this one, I’m still trying as these are just two teams I can’t figure out. Michigan State isn’t just inconsistent game to game and quarter to quarter, they’re literally inconsistent from play to play. I like FAU but I can’t get past vision of Longhorns running up and down the field and scoring in a game where they were on the road getting more points than they are today. I’m sitting this one out.

Virginia at Connecticut (Today 9/13/08, 7:30 EST) Line: UConn -10 1/2

This can also be under the heading of line moves as the line has dropped from 12 1/2 to where we see it today. Personally I wouldn’t pick Virginia to be within 20 of most D-1 programs and I believe the main reason this line is dropping is oddly enough the exposure that Virginia is getting for the dismantling that happened when they got throttled by USC. Maybe people are trying to hype the Trojans by hyping them? That’s the only way it makes any sense to me. Connecticut should have really beaten up on Temple last week. I watch the game and it was played in the rain. While the Huskies won the game in OT they missed several chip shot field goals and did the old fumble two inches in front of the goal line when going in for a score. Sure I was happy to get my cover from Temple but it was pretty lucky. I’m not so sure the Cav’s are so lucky. I’m leaning Huskies but just not leaning enough. If the line drops to single digits we may take another look.

North Texas at LSU (Today 9/13/08, 8 EST) Line: LSU -42 1/2

What we have here is the classic match up between the worst team in college football as of last week and the defending National Champions. While the champs aren’t the team they were last year North Texas isn’t much of a team at all. As crazy as this spread looks I think it is just right. It is so right in fact that I can’t touch the thing.

Kentucky Vs. Middle Tennessee State (Today 9/13/08, 7 EST) Line: Kentucky -18

This line moved from 16 1/2. Everyone knows I like Kentucky and their Head Coach Rich Brooks. Everyone also knows I liked MTSU last week at Maryland and they didn’t let us down. Throw in the 18 points and I still can’t seperate these two enough to play a side.

Well that’s all for toady because like you I’m going to get ready and watch some football. If the site is messed up for the next few days it is because it is being worked on. I am still a work in progress here so hopefully I’ll have it at least consistently running, that’s the bare minimum. MY SITE WILL ALWAYS WORK BEST USING FIREFOX, INTERNET EXPLORER ISN’T USER FRIENDLY FROM THIS SIDE OF THINGS.
